How to Burn a Hemp Wick Candle
Hemp is such an incredible resource! It’s fast growing, and can be used to produce just about anything you can think of, including paper, fabric, and even building materials. It’s renewable, and never has to be genetically modified because it’s naturally pest-resistant.
We make our hemp wicks by hand, coating them in a plant-based beeswax alternative called Candelilla, which smells faintly of honey while still being completely vegan. Cared for properly, you can enjoy over 20 hours of gorgeous scent and flame from your Simple Alchemy Co travel candle.
To begin, make sure your hemp wick is about 1/8 inch tall. It may seem short, but hemp is an extremely efficient wick material. Use a long match or lighter, and hold it on the wick to get your first burn started. Because we do not use any accelerants, it may take a couple tries to get the wick to light, but don’t worry, it will light.
Once the wick is lit, it’s very important to let your candle burn until the pool of melted wax reaches the edges of the vessel. This usually takes about 3 hours, and ensures you will get the longest life and cleanest burns out of your candle. After the melted wax has reached the edges, you can blow out your candle and let it cool.
Once cooled, gently pinch or cut the wick to shorten it back to about 1/8 inch. Your wick trimmings can go directly into the compost bin.
CAUTION: Never leave a burning candle unattended. Be sure to place it on a heat resistant surface. Keep away from children, pets, and flammable items.
