What to Give People Who Live in Tiny Homes

You know how it goes…
A good friend is getting married, or growing their family, or just having a birthday. You want to give them a gift, but they live in a house that’s about the size of your first childhood playhouse. What on earth do you give someone basically lives in a shoebox?

We’ve run into this a lot. We live in 400 square feet, and we’re converting a shuttle bus into a tiny home. When that’s finally done, we’ll be living in about 115 square feet. Nobody ever knows what it’s okay to give us, and when they do give us things, they usually come with apologies.

Yes, you can always give the gift of experiences. Movie tickets, restaurant gift cards, and so on. But sometimes it’s just nice to wrap a tangible, tactile present for someone. So we’ve come up with a very simple list of questions to ask yourself when shopping for, or making a gift for your tiny-house-dwelling buddies!

1) DOES IT HAVE A FAIRLY SMALL FOOTPRINT?
2) IS IT USEFUL?
3) CAN IT BE USED FOR SOMETHING OTHER THAN ITS ORIGINAL PURPOSE?
4) CAN IT BE RECYCLED, REUSED OR COMPOSTED?
5) DOES BUYING IT SUPPORT CAUSES THEY BELIEVE IN (I.E. REFORESTATION, ANIMAL KINDNESS, ETC.)?

Once you’ve asked those questions, shop away! The following is a list of gift ideas and shopping locations, which we will keep updating as we discover new artisans we support. These are all in addition to our own products (which do make great gifts for eco-conscious folks in small spaces, FYI). We’ve found that most folks who live with a tiny footprint tend to also be passionate about caring for this planet of ours, and this gift guide reflects that. None of these are affiliate links, and none of them will link you to Amazon or any other such company. If you have an idea for something to add, let us know at info@simplealchemy.co.
